Checking NOTAMs
The NAV Canada Collaborative Flight Planning Services website is an online tool which offers services which can help you prepare for flight. This article will go over how to use the CFPS site to look at NOTAMs. For information on how to use the CFPS site to look at aviation weather visit this link.
Here is what you see when you go to the https://plan.navcanada.ca/wxrecall/ site. To check NOTAMs, ensure that only the NOTAM checkbox in the left panel is selected.
To check the NOTAMs for our field, you can type in our field id (CKJ7) or can type in Starbuck. In the example below, I typed in Starbuck. Because there is more than one Starbuck in the database, you have to choose the correct Starbuck from the list by highlighting the appropriate item and pressing the enter key.
After you press enter, press the search button. You will get a result similar to the following. Note that only 2 results returned. This is because these are all of the NOTAMs that are directly related to CKJ7. NOTAMs for other nearby fields are not included in this list which means that this method is inadequate.
(Please note that I only show the first “page” in all of the attached examples.)
If you wish to see all of the NOTAMs in our area, there are a couple of ways in which you can accomplish this.
Method 1:
You can define a route radius around CKJ7 by checking the Route Radius checkbox and entering a value in the Radius in NM text box. In the example below, I entered 70 nautical miles. This would work for most local flights.
And here are the results of looking for NOTAMs in a 70 NM radius from our field. Note that there are now 34 results returned.
Method 2:
If you are going cross country, you can pick 2 or more aeroports and define a route radius to cover more ground. One of our XC pilots recommends choosing Winnipeg & Brandon as the route and sets to the radius to 70 NM. 43 results are returned.
For the curious
Lastly, here is how you get a listing of all NOTAMS in our Flight Information Region (CZWG) with 288 results returned.
